Avoid doing ambitious projects too soon – The biggest mistake that newbie woodworkers can do is take on a project that is way beyond their skill range. Though it is certainly a lot more worthwhile to churn up an impressive project, but if you do not yet have the necessary knowledge and skills to make them, you will only end up quitting in frustration. Start with small projects that you know you can easily create, like bookends, wall shelves, birdhouses, and progressively take on more difficult projects.
Always use the proper safety gear – Always use the proper safety gear when working on your projects. You never know when a sharp piece of wood, or maybe even a nail, will come flying towards your face so you should always wear safety goggles. You should also have a first aid kit within easy reach because getting cuts and bruises when working with wood is almost always a certainty; having a fire extinguisher handy is also a good idea.
Always use the materials prescribed in the plans – Beginners usually feel that all wood basically behaves the same, so substituting a cheaper kind of wood is alright. What they do not know is that different kinds of wood have different properties. For instance, if you are making a picnic table, do not substitute yellow pine as the material to use, else it will easily break apart and last only a couple of weeks.
By keeping these simple woodworking tips in mind, novices like you will be able to gain the most amount of enjoyment from this hobby. You will find that there are few other hobbies that can give the same amount of satisfaction like being a woodworker, so just take it slow and in the near future you will also be able to churn up beautiful pieces of furniture.
