Everybody likes to get free stuff, and woodworkers are no exception. And if you are out of ideas on what woodworking project you should do next, there are plenty of resources that you can go to for free plans, and here are some of them:
Google Books – The great thing about searching for free wood working plans in Google Books is that you can actually get complete instructional books with illustrations and detailed instructions. To get free plans in Google Books you simply type in “woodworking” in the search box and you will be shown hundreds of books that you can browse through; just choose the books that are focused more on your current skill level. Take note that most of the books are just sample versions for review purposes, unless you purchase the actual book from Google Books you will not be able to view the entire contents.
Home Improvement Store Websites – The websites of the big home improvement supply stores are also a treasure trove when it comes to free wood working plans. Just look in the DIY section of their website and you will be given a whole lot of choices of plans; the great thing about this is that you can also get an idea on how much you will be spending on materials too.
Woodworking Magazine – Though this is not exactly “free” because you need to pay for the subscription, but if you consider yourself a serious woodworker then you probably have a subscription for at least one magazine already. Or if you want you can just log in to the magazine’s website and look for plans in there.
Project Gutenberg – This is a website that is devoted to providing people with ebook versions of books, though they can only give away ebook versions of titles whose copyright has already expired; so most of the books in there are more than a hundred years old. But luckily there are quite a few books in there that are related to woodworking and carpentry. Just download the books that you like and print out the plans that you like, or if you like you can read them on your tablet PC.
With these free resources you will never be at a loss as to what your next woodworking project should be. Just keep in mind that you should always choose plans that you know you have the skills to do and that you also have the right equipment for the job.
