What is The Level and tape measure? How to use them efficiently in your wood crafting hobby

Woodworking doesn’t only require skills. You’d also need different tools that will make your job easier and more efficient. And of course, it’s advisable to study how to use them correctly. In this article, you’ll learn about the “level” and the “tape measure”.

What is a level?

A level (also called a spirit level) is a device used to determine if a woodworking project is at a perfect level, hence its name. It has a glass tube that is filled partially with liquid, usually alcohol.

How to buy a level

It’s important to buy a high-quality level. This will affect the outcome of your project. A level should have these qualities:

• Made from durable materials

• Markings for easy position checking

• Ergonomic handles for easy use

Levels may cost anywhere from $5 to $50 depending on the brand and quality. It’s always a good idea to invest in good quality tools. So, don’t hesitate to really spend on a spirit level.

How to use a level

1. Clean your level and the area or project you will use it on. Make sure to remove any dust, dirt, or grime.

2. Check if the level is accurate. Place the level onto a flat surface. Check if the bubble is at the center of the glass tube. Flip the level so the bottom of the level is at the top. If the bubble is still at the center, then your level is accurate.

3. When checking if your project is level, you have to look at the bubble carefully. The bubble should be between the lines of the glass tube.

What is a tape measure?

All tape measures are used for measuring distance, length, or width. But, a measuring tape used in carpentry is often stiff, curved, and made from metal. It’s not completely stiff since it retracts and rolls into a coil for convenience.

How to choose a tape measure

There are many tape measure brands you can choose from. Still, there are many factors you should consider before you buy one.

• Length – For woodworkers who work on houses or bigger construction, a 25- or 30-foot tape measure is advisable. For those who work on smaller projects, a tape measure that’s 15 feet long or shorter is enough.

• Width – There are tape measures that are wide and thin. A wider one would have a longer standout. Thinner ones can be flatter, which can be useful for some projects.

• Measurement – Standard measuring tapes are in inches. But, there are also ones that are both in inches and metric.

• Locking method – Measuring tapes may have automatic or manual locks. Choose the one that’s more convenient for you. But, manual-locking tapes tend to be more durable.

• Accuracy and durability – These two are the most important factors. The tape measure’s accuracy can be compromised if its tang isn’t durable enough. The rivets may become loose, and that may cause it to give inaccurate measurements.

How to use a measuring tape

1. Place the tang or the hook of your measuring tape on one end of the object you need to measure.

2. Stretch the tape measure across the object.

3. If you’re taking measurements of an object, read the measurement of what’s exactly on the tape. You’ll need to learn how to read the measurement in inches.

4. If you’re using it to mark a piece of wood, for example, you have to mark it using a V-shape. The point of the V-shape would tell you the exact place of your measurement.

5. Lock the tape measure before marking or writing down measurements. This keeps the tape from retracting back.

6. Never retract the tape quickly. It may cause injuries to people around you and it can also damage the tape.
