You can recycle your wooden pallets to create a lattice-style wine rack cabinet that can hold around 24 bottles per cube. Create as much cubes as you like and join them together to form a large cabinet that can lean against the wall. The simple design can perfectly complement your home wine cellar.
Materials to Use
Prepare the following materials to start creating your lattice wine cabinet:
* Wood pallets
* 1”x10”x12’ pine boards
* 1 ¼” coarse screws
* Wood glue
* Wood stain and conditioner
Taking the Pallet Apart
Pallets are a great source of wood for projects. However, it can be tricky to take them apart. There’s also a big chance of damaging the wood as the pallet comes apart.
Here’s how to de-construct your pallet to extract the wood you will use for the wine rack cabinet.
1. Position the pallet on its end. The nails must be parallel to the ground.
2. Cut from one side first. Cut from the topmost part and cut down and through the nails. Use a reciprocating saw instead of a hammer and pry bar. The saw helps you cut apart the pallet faster than other tools can.
3. Continue to cut till you reach the bottom piece. Once done, the side support wood should fall off easily.
4. Repeat the cutting process for the other side.
5. Remove the pallet’s center support by cutting through its nails with the reciprocating saw. You may use your hammer and pry bar to remove stubborn nails or if you feel you’ll likely damage the wood with the saw.
6. Once the center support falls off, the pallet boards will come apart.
7. Remove the nails on the boards. Pound the nails with a nail set, then pull the heads out with your hammer’s claw end.
8. If the nails are impossible to remove, drive them deeper down the wood instead of trying to yank them out.
9. Plane and sand each pallet piece. Your pallet wood boards are now good to go.
Creating the Lattice Wine Cabinet Cubes
Follow these instructions to start making your cabinet. The end product is one cube of wine rack, which measures 9 ¼” deep and 21” square.
1. Cut the pine boards to the following sizes:
* For the top and bottom of the cubes: 2 pieces, 21 inches each
* For the sides: 2 pieces, 19.5” each
2. Dry-fit the wine rack’s frame using some masking tape. Once satisfied, create marks where your pocket holes will be drilled.
3. Drill your holes on all ends of the 4 board pieces.
4. Assemble the frame by securing screws through the pocket holes accordingly. You may add wood glue to strengthen the holes if you like.
5. Measure the corners of the cube diagonally. It should be around 27.6”.
6. Take one wood board from your deconstructed pallet and cut according to the diagonal measurement of the cube. Check if it fits snugly inside the cube, and adjust its size as needed. Once you’ve reached the proper fit, take another wood piece from the pallet and cut to the exact length as the first one.
7. Mark one of the pallet board’s center.
8. Take a ¾” scrap wood piece and place it center over the pallet board’s line. Ensure that it forms a square, then mark.
9. Measure the halfway point from the board’s width, and mark. This is where you’ll cut a notch on each pallet board so that it forms a strong X.
10. Cut the notches using a jig saw.
11. Fit the two pallet boards to form the X, then shove it inside the cube and check the fit. You may use some wood glue to strengthen the grip of the X shelves on the cube’s interior.
12. Sand the finished cube, then use a wood conditioner and two coats of wood stain to finish off your wine rack.
Make several cubes as needed to house all the wine in your cellar. Join them either by nailing or screwing each cube to another one. Be sure to join the cubes first before you finish off with wood conditioner and wood stain.
The Bottomline
A lattice-style wine rack cabinet is a stylish way to store your wine collections. It can easily be made with a woodworking plan that uses boards from wood pallets, such as the one used for this tutorial.
The basic cube structure of this lattice wine rack is so easy to make; you might even want to make another one if you have lots of wine to store. Create lots of cubes, stack them together, and place them against your wall for a lovely new home for your wine collections.
