While the HBO series Game of Thrones has concluded May this year, and fans are not yet over the (badly-written) final season, there are still a few things to rejoice about this fandom. Cosplayers still don their Lannister and Stark costumes, bookworms still wait for the next installment by GRR Martin, and wood workers think of ways to GoT-ify their homes.
This brings you to the topic at hand: Would you want to create your own royal chair a la Queen Cersei, Daenerys, or Sansa? And no, it’s not going to be made of iron. It’s going to be fashioned from wooden pallets.
You read that right: A Game of Thrones-inspired wooden chair.
The thing is, you will have to start with a basic canvas – a wooden chair – and then embellish it with pallets and/or cardboard to recreate the famous iron throne.
Why use pallets? They are found everywhere, and they are cheap. They are even discarded in some companies.
However, pallets are challenging to take apart. Compared to redwood or lumber, pallets don’t stand much of a chance against decay and moisture. Care is needed to keep your wooden pallet Game of Thrones royal chair functional and looking good.
Materials:
• hammer
• drill
• crowbar
• 3/8” spade for counter sinks
• wood glue
• screw
• hand saw
• wood putty
• 4 pallets
Procedure:
1. Disassemble the pallets with a saw. Cut off parts that are not fit for use.
2. Mark the throne’s legs. Draw one-inch blocks on a 35” 1×6 board. If the wood is 5.5 inches wide, the resulting block should measure ½ inches at the top. Use these half-inch blocks to draw the pattern.
3. Measure the arm rests. Draw one-inch blocks on 32” 1×6, again resulting in a course of half-inch blocks at the top. Use these blocks to draw or mark the pattern.
4. Repeat the process for the bottom back rest rail, this time drawing a grid of one-inch blocks on a 21.5” 1×4 board. For the top back rest rail, draw the same grid on a 22” 1×4.
5. Cut out 7.75”x 2.5” of pallet wood for the two armrest brackets. Next, cut out the rear legs, top and bottom brackets, and the armrests. Make sure the woods are clamped securely as you cut them with a hand saw. Because you will need two of the rear legs and armrests, just use what you cut out as pattern so you don’t have to do the grids again.
6. Measure and cut out the front legs. Here you will need 20” x 3.5” boards for the front crosspiece, 2 front legs, and the front seat slat. Label the parts with a pencil for easy assembling.
7. Cut out the rear crosspiece, which should measure 18.5” x 3.5”.
8. Measure and cut out the rear back supports from a 1×4. The measurement is 23” on one side, and 26” on the other.
9. Cut out nine seat slats that measure 1.75 inches.
10. Cut seven back slats from 34” – 36”. Since these can be tapered, they can easily be arranged to form a fan shape for the throne.
11. To decorate it and make it look like the Iron Throne, simply draw swords on cardboard, or create paper mache, and attach them on the backrest, armrest, and legs. A caveat: you cannot take this out on a dewy morning. Otherwise, the paper products will be reduced to a pulp.
12. Sand and paint as you deem fit.
