How to make an interior and external wooden timber shutter for a window

There are a few reasons why you should get window shutters instead of curtains or blinds. One: You don’t need to put them in the laundry and replace them every month. And two: It will be a long time before you’ll have to replace shutters as they are sturdier than traditional blinds.

Window shutters are stable covers made with vertical frames and horizontal rails. They come in two kinds: interior (used inside the house) and exterior (used outside the house). They are usually made of wood, which makes them long-lasting and sturdy.

If you don’t have interior and external wooden shutters at home yet, you can always build your own. But first, you’re going to need these things:

• Wooden boards for end frames, actual shutters, and braces (the dimensions will depend on the size of your windows)

• Measuring tape
• Sandpaper or sanding machine
• Wood glue
• Table saw
• Nail gun
• Drill
• Drill bits
• Wood filler
• Tee hinges
• Cans of paint
• Stirrer
• Small paint roller

Once you have all these, just follow the steps below to make your own set of window shutters. These will work for both interior and exterior purposes.

Step #1: Measure your window/s

Take your measuring tape and take the height and width of your windows. This will make it easier for you to gauge how big your shutters will be.

Step #2: Cut wooden boards

Once you’ve gotten the measurements, it’s time to cut the boards you will use using the table saw. Make sure to cut pieces for the frame, shutters, and braces.

Step #3: Sanding

This step will ensure that your wooden pieces don’t have rough parts and bumps on the surface. This will also help even out the edges for easy alignment.

Step #4: Painting

Before attaching the pieces on your window frame, you have to paint it first. You can choose neutral colors like white and beige; or go bold with red and blue hues. Let the paint dry for a few hours.

Step #5: Assemble

First, attach the two frames on the beams or walls by the window opening. Use the nail gun to keep them in place.

Next, lay the wood for the shutters next to each other—you can cut them on the table saw again if you want to adjust their size or appearance. Once you’re happy with the size, use the wood glue on the sides of each board and stick them together.

Keep them extra secure by adding braces on the top, middle, and bottom parts using the nail gun.

Once you have two shutters, it’s time to add hinges on them. What you do is drill holes on the braces where you can attach the hinges with the drill bits. Do the same process on the frames you placed on the side—make sure the hinges are even, else, the shutters will be uneven.

Step #6: Add handles and locks

The handles will obviously make it easier for you to open and close your shutters. The locks will keep them secure. Do this by, again, drilling holes on the brace (opposite side of the hinges) and screw in the handles and/or locks. Make sure they’re tightly placed.

Hope you have fun making your own interior and exterior window shutters!
