This coat rack with pegs hanger can be built by using scraps of wood. But it doesn’t mean that you can’t use fresh wood for this.
This guide will teach you how to make one with as little tools and materials possible. Of course, if you do have some power tools on hand, especially a router, you can add intricate designs on this mounted coat rack project.
Building the Rack
It is advisable to get a 3/4” plywood for this project. You can also use hardwood timber to make sure you’re going to have a solid coat rack.
You can also use a 3/4” inch particle board, but it isn’t advisable since a coat can weigh the pegs down too much to the point that they can snap off from the particle board.
Cut 18” x 3” from the wood material that you chose. You can extend the length if you need to.
Procure a 3/4” x 15” dowel rod. The dowel will be cut to dowel pins that will be used as the rack’s pegs. Also, make sure that the dowel rod you’ll get is not grainy.
Do note that if you cut a longer board, you will need additional 3” of dowel per 3” of length you added. For example, if you cut 21” mount, then you will need 18” of dowel.
Cut the dowels into 3” tall pegs. Sand the edges and ends of the pegs.
Mark a single long horizontal line in the middle of the wood slab. Each side of the line should be 1.5” wide. This will serve as a guide to where your pegs will align.
Starting from one end, place a mark every 3”. This will be the exact location where you will install the pegs.
Get 1.5” flat wood screw for each peg. Drill all the way the perpendicular marks. Drill at least 3/4″ deep in the center bottom of each peg.
Using a bar clamp to hold the pegs in place while drilling will make your job easier. Screw the screws on the mount starting from the back panel.
If you accidentally used a grainy or weak dowel rod, it’s best that you use plastic screw inserts. They will prevent the screws from damaging the pegs from the inside.
Apply some super glue on the screw and the bottom end of the pegs. Screw down the pegs on each of the screw. Let the glue cure.
Mounting the Rack
The method of mounting the rack depends on the type of wall you have and how thick it is.
If you have a thin drywall, you can use construction adhesive to attach the rack. However, this will be weak, and your hanger can only hold a few lightweight coats.
Another thing you can do is to install hooks on the wall. Then you can just hook the coat hanger on them.
If you have thicker drywall or concrete, you can drill on it and screw the mount on it.
