Whether it be toys, jewelry, and tools, having someplace to store all your valuables is always a valuable addition to your room. Fortunately, there is the option to build these repositories yourself. With the right tools, materials, and a woodworking plan, you can have one assembled and ready to use within a few days.
Step 1: Sizing, Design, and Measurements
First, you’d have to identify the kind of role your box plays as this determines their size, dimensions, and overall design. For instance, tool boxes require a larger container size to fit multiple compartments it. On the other hand, a jewelry box will require smaller dimensions so as to fit in a cabinet or a drawer.
Toy boxes will be larger and generally simpler design to allow for the storage of multiple 10-20 inch toys. Many sites offer various box designs in PDF form. You can follow these designs to the point or you can take inspiration from them and make amendments here and there to fit your needs.
Step 2: Materials and Tools
A box is perhaps one of the simplest woodworking projects out there. You only need wood glue, galvanized screws, a drill, a plane, and sandpaper. Depending on your design, you should also purchase hinges and locks to be attached to the box.
As for the wood you will use, this will depend greatly on the specifications required by the woodworking plan you use. But, just to be safe, have more than what is required by your woodworking plan. Spares will come in handy in case you make mistakes in the cutting and assembling phases.
Step 3: Cutting and Preparation
Regardless of size, a box’s design remains relatively simple which is that a container with a lid. Start things off by cutting off the components of your container. Here’s a list of what you’ll need for a rectangular box:
1 floor panel
2 side wall panels
2 front and back wall panels
4 side trims
4 back and front trims
1 lid panel
2 side lid trims
2 front and back lid trims
As you cut each panel, sand down the rough edges. The surface of interiors should be as smooth as possible since you will be storing your valuable materials there.
Also, if your design features slots at the side of your panels, make sure that their measurements match that of the holes in the connecting panel. If possible, have your panels numbered so you would know which panels fit with one another.
Step 4: Assembly
Start with the bottom panel by attaching the four wall panels along its sides. You can apply wood glue at the sides for extra security and then sealing everything with screws. Once the main box is done, you can then apply the trims at the top and bottom of each side.
As for the lid, you only have to glue the trims to it and then install the hinges. Once done, you must then attach the lid to the box through the hinges and install the lock at both halves. For jewelry boxes, you will have to line the interiors with soft fabric to protect your valuables.
