An extra storage is always welcome in any home but it is a lot better if it can also be used for another purpose. A good example of a multipurpose storage item is a storage ottoman. Those interested in Do-it-yourself projects can easily make one following a woodworking plan. There are several plans that can be used as reference online or you can just follow these steps.
1. To make a padded storage ottoman, one just needs a half-inch thick plywood, 2-inch wood strips, quilt batting, 4-inch foam, upholstery fabric, two-inch brush, paint, power drill, wood screws, wood glue, hot glue, sander, staple gun, ribbon, decorative buttons (optional) and four pieces of feet.
2. Once you have all the materials, refer to the plan for the measurements or decide on the size of your ottoman. Make-up your mind if you want a square, rectangle or triangle ottoman. Ensure that you have enough materials for the size and shape that you want. If you want to have fewer pieces to work on, then a triangle ottoman will be nice.
3. Cut the half-inch thick plywood to the font, sides and back parts based on your desired size. To prepare the bottom part, make sure to give 1 inch allowance in the length and width for the padding. Then, smoothen the edges of the wood pieces by sanding. Attach the front and back parts to the bottom with the use of screws and wood glue and then screw on the sides. Attach the feet to the bottom, using screws from inside of the box.
4. To prepare the cover, get the outside measurement of the box. Then cut the half-inch thick plywood accordingly. Glue the two-inch wood strips to the edges and attach it firmly to the board with nails. You can now paint the underside of the cover and the inside of the box with your desired color.
5. Now is the time to cut the 4-inch foam for the lid and outside the box. Make sure the pieces will have an allowance of a quarter-inch. If you want your ottoman to be extra-soft, go ahead and use a double layer of foam for the top cover. Attach the foam to the lid and box using glue then cover it with the quilt batting. Make sure that the sides overlap and then staple it to the underside.
6. Cut the fabric with an allowance of 2 inches for the box and 4 inches for the lid. Again, staple the fabric in place. For more style, you may use fabrics with different patterns for the box and the lid.
7. For the finishing touches, hide the edges of the fabric and the staples with ribbon. Use a hot glue to attach the ribbons where necessary. If you prepared decorative buttons, use a hot glue to attach them to the box of lid as desired. You can also place decals that are non-slip on the feet of your ottoman.
There you have your new multi-purpose storage unit! You now put your knick-knacks inside. If you have excess materials, make another one for a friend!
