• Step 1 – Have a design in mind

For this, you can either draw your plans yourself, or look for ready-made woodworking plans. Most builders prefer following woodworking plans since all the materials and tools are already listed down.

• Step 2 – Prepare your materials

After cutting up all the wood you’ll need, sand down all the edges using different grits of sand paper. Sanding down is essential to prevent splinters. Use a rag to wipe out sanded dust and stain them afterwards. Allow the stained pieces to dry before drilling pilot hotels into them for the screws.

• Step 3 – Start assembling the cart

Attach the base cabinet to the legs you bought or built. Use wood glue first, and then attach the pieces securely using wood screws. Once the base is finished, attach the top wooden shelf. This is the part that will hold the microwave. To make it sturdy, attach cross braces between the base and the top shelf.

• Step 4 – Assemble the drawers

If your plan has drawers, start installing it into the microwave hutch. Don’t forget to insert the drawer runners at the sides first. Once done, slide in each drawer.

• Step 5 – Apply finishing

Once you’ve assembled the whole hutch according to the plan, turn it upside down and install rolling casters if you wish. Secure with screws. Turn it right side up and check if everything is aligned.

Once done, you can now apply finishing. Check if there is any dried-out excess glue and gently scrape those off with a chisel. You can stain the wood if you want, making sure to let it dry for at least 24 hours before using it.
