How to make a shaker cabinet door panels from old flat fronts with a Kreg jig, table saw, pocket screws and new medium-density fibreboard (MDF)

If you’re looking for a kitchen cabinet door that’s minimalist yet chic, consider getting shaker-style ones. These are characterized by a five-piece door with a dimpled panel at the center.

When you see it, it will remind you of rustic, old-timey homes, especially if they’re in a dark brown color. Those in lighter shades, on the other hand, give off a suburban feel.

This cabinet door design looks so simple that you can easily build one using leftover wood. Or even better: flat fronts from old cabinets in your home. How can you do this? First, gather the following materials:

• Wooden flat fronts
• Sandpaper or a sanding machine
• Drill or screwdriver
• Table saw
• Kreg Jig
• Medium-density fibreboard (MDF)
• Hinges
• Handles
• Nail gun
• Wood glue

Have everything? If yes, just follow the steps below to build your own shaker-style cabinet doors for your kitchen cupboards and other storage spaces in your home.

Step #1: Dismantle the old flat fronts

If the flat fronts are still attached to their frames, you should take them off using a drill or screwdriver.

Step #2: Make the shaker pieces

Using the flat front pieces you have now, use the table saw to make the five pieces of the shaker cabinet door. The important part is the central panel, so don’t forget that.

If your flat front pieces aren’t enough, you can use a medium-density fibreboard (MDF). The measurements will depend on the size of your cabinet space, so be sure you have the numbers right.

Step #3: Sand

Smoothen the boards’ surface by sanding them. This will ensure that there are no rough or bumpy edges that might hinder your building process.

Step #4: Drill holes

Prep for assembly and drill pocket holes using a kreg jig on the top and bottom of the central panel. These holes will make it easier for you to attach the four other pieces onto it.

Step #5: Glue and nail

Add wood glue to the pieces to ensure that the pieces stick together. To keep everything secure, shoot the nail gun in the areas where you made the holes. Let the glue dry for an hour before proceeding to the next step.

Step #6: Attaching to the hinges

Now that you have your shaker-style cabinet doors, attach the hinges to one side. Measure the distance of the screw holes so you can seamlessly attach them to the cabinet frames.

Step #7: Attach handles

Of course, you mustn’t forget the handles. You can either get ones that you can glue down or screw onto the cabinet doors. Make sure they’re secure as well.

With these steps and tips, hopefully you can make the ideal cabinets for your home. You can even customize the color and make it rustic (choose reddish brown) or just keep it simple with a light beige shade.

Well, truth be told, it doesn’t really matter how you design it as long as it matches your needs and preferences—that’s what DIY woodworking is all about, after all.
