Creating your own picture frame is fun and surprisingly cheap, not to mention it will also be rewarding to know that the frame is made out of wooden pallet scraps!
Choose your Pallet and Gather Your Materials
The first thing you’ll need is to find a pallet boards with similar thickness. Wood pallets have become a favorite material used in decor and even in some furniture pieces. This is because they are eco-friendly and inexpensive.
In choosing your wooden pallet, make sure it’s chemical free and non-toxic.
The following are the needed supplies (some are optional):
o Pallet boards
o Nail Gun
o Nailer
o Wood Glue
o Miter saw
o Table saw
o Staple Gun
o Sandpaper
o Hammer
Prepare the Pallet
1) Run the pallet board against the table saw to create 4 boarders for each side of the frame. Then cut 4 more boarders, this time to give more solidness and dimension around the picture frame.
2) Using the miter saw, cut a 45° angle on each edge to make up the frames. You can dry fit the pallets together to ensure its fit. Then also cut the trim at the same angle and ensure its fit around the frame.
Assemble Together
3) Next thing is the assembling of the pieces together. If the wooden pallet is so thin then you can just apply glue alone; otherwise, use both nail and wood glue together in each corner. After that, attach the trim using the nailer.
Note that this step will take time; you can’t just move the frame until the wood glue is all dry. This as a tip: you can use an angle clamp to ensure the tight fit of each corner.
Finishing touches
You can also sand in the wood to achieve a smooth frame texture using the sandpaper. You can also stain the surface if you want a polished look.
4) This time, you need to cut the glass that were the size you need! This is hard not to break a glass so you need to get the right pressure enough to break the scored lines. However, there are several methods of cutting a glass without using a glass cutter, such as with the use of strings, wire and scissors.
Put the glass before the photo and start to cut small strips of wood from the remaining scraps. Put the pieces of wood behind the frame to serve as a bracket securing the contents of the frame using small screws.
5) Add your choice of hanging hardware on the top board using the nails included in the package. You can hang it and you’re done!
The procedure above can be used in making a large and small pallet wood picture frame.
This rustic charm of a picture frame made out of a wooden pallet is perfect especially if you want a house with a country feel. You could also give these frames as a gift, which saves your money come the holidays. It’s a quaint piece of décor that preserves the quality of treasured photos.
