How to build floating wooden shelves that slide and standing storage shelves out of wood

Floating wooden shelves are great additions to homes because they are attractive and functional. The ones that have sliding compartments are practical because they save space and provide additional storage. These shelves are ideal for the living room, study area, garage, and home office.

1. Create a plan.
Before anything else, you need to draft a plan. This way, you can do the procedures without hassle and delay. Find out how you want the shelves to look like as well as where to install them. Determine the sizes and styles that you want and create your plan accordingly.

2. Gather the tools and materials.
For this project, you will need the following tools and materials:

• 2 inches x 4 inches scraps of wood
• 1 inch x 10 inches x 3 inches lumber
• 2 ½ inches and 1 ¼ inches pocket hole screws or deck screws
• wood glue
• pocket hole jig
• pin nails
• circular saw or table saw
• miter saw
• drill and driver (cordless)
• sander
• clamps
• level
• air compressor
• nail gun

3. Build the support frame
Rip the scraps of wood to your desired thickness and size. Use the miter saw to cut the ledge board. It should be half an inch shorter than the inner length of the shelf so that you can easily fit your shelf into its support frame.
Use the miter saw again to cut the length of the wood for the arms. The top and bottom of the shelf should be 9 ¼ inches wide. The support arm should be 7 ¾ inches.
Fasten this support arm to the ledge board. You can use deck screws or a pocket hole jig to speed up the process. Drill through the back of the ledger boar to the support arms. Sand down the rough edges.

3. Build the box for your shelf.
Cut your shelf according to your specifications. Rip its front and sides. Fasten them to the bottom using a pocket hole jig and wood glue. You may use a pin nailer in place of a pocket hole jig. Then again, a pocket hole jig is more ideal since it can hide screw and nail holes effectively.
See to it that your support frame can fit inside your shelf. Test it before you mount it on your wall. Use a pain nailer and wood glue to fasten the top of the shelf.
Use a sandpaper or sander to sand the shelf until it is flush and smooth. See to it that there are no rough edges that may be dangerous. Then, you can stain it to match the color or theme of your room.

4. Hang your floating shelf.
Finally, you can hang your floating shelf on your wall. Fasten the support frame onto your wall and then slide on your shelf. If necessary, you can also screw the top of your floating shelf to its support frame to make sure that it’s stable.
