By creating a DIY corner curio cabinet, you can save money and choose the quality of your materials. Plus, you can showcase your woodworking talent along with your prized items in your house.
This guide will help you on how to build and make (DIY) a wooden elegant corner curio cabinet that’s five feet tall, 2 feet wide and with up to five display shelves. All you need to do is prepare the right tools and obtain the right materials.
What You Need to Have:
• Basic carpentry tools (hammer, saw, measuring tape, drill, etc.)
• Plywood
• Paint or wood stain
• Hardware parts (nails, screws, etc.)
• Precut glass door
What You Need to Do:
Cut All the Pieces for the Cabinet
1. Cut a sheet of plywood by 5 feet long and 2 feet wide. This will make the first side of the corner cabinet. You can use a circular saw or any regular saw for this.
2. Cut another sheet of plywood by 5 feet long and 1 feet 11 ¼ inches wide for the other side.
3. Using two corners of a plywood sheet, measure out two triangle shapes. Two of the sides of each triangle should measure 2 feet 2 inches long.
4. Cut the two triangles. These will be used for the cabinet’s top and bottom.
5. Measure out another four or five triangle shapes. This time, two of the sides of each triangle should measure exactly 2 feet long. Cut the triangles. These will be used to make the inner shelves of the cabinet.
6. Measure the diagonal side of a shelf. Use that to measure the width of the glass door for you cabinet.
7. Go to a glass shop and have a piece of glass cut by the measured width and with the length of 4 feet 10 inches.
8. Have them smooth all the edges and attach two semi-tight hinges on one long side of the glass door. The hinges should be placed 3 inches inward from each end and 1 inch from across the top.
9. Sand the edges of the cut plywood pieces.
10. Apply paint or wood stain of your choice. Let them dry.
Assembling the Pieces Together
1. Attach one side of the cabinet measuring 5 feet by 2 feet to one of the triangles measuring 2 feet 2 inches on the sides.
2. The 2-feet-long side of the cabinet’s side should be rested on one of the 2 feet 2 inches sides of the bottom triangle. Ideally, you should use screws for this, but nails will do.
3. Attach the other cabinet side, the one that measures 1 foot 11 ¼ inches wide, to the bottom triangle and the wider cabinet side. The attached sides should now form a right corner.
4. Attach the top triangle the same way as the bottom triangle.
5. Place and attach the other triangles to form the shelves, spacing them according to how you want.
6. Place the cabinet in a standing position and hold the glass door up so you can mount the hinges. For this step, you should ask someone to hold the glass door.
7. Try the glass door and recheck the attachment of the hinges. Also check the attachment of the shelves to make sure they’re strong enough to hold house items.
Now, your DIY corner curio cabinet is ready for use!
