Unsecured guns become a danger if you have children around. You, therefore, need to make sure you find it where you placed it, making sure no one in your household stumbles upon it by mistake.
There are many places to hide your gun. To make it easy for you, you can build any of the three safe gun storages below to keep your guns secure.
Hidden gun cabinet
1. Find a place on a wall. This step could be the most difficult part. You need to check the wall has no plumbing and wiring. The hidden cabinet must look natural.
2. Measure the wall such that it fits a tall mirror or a big painting, depending on your preference. The mirror or painting will be used to conceal the cabinet.
3. Start making a hole on the wall. The hole should be smaller than the object you will use to cover the cabinet. In this case a mirror which serves as the cabinet’s door.
4. With your measuring tape, measure the length and width of the hole. Having taken the measurement, build the box that will fit the hole exactly. Start with the frame then build the back side. For the back side, you can use as material either a plastic, paneling, or plywood.
5. .When you are done with the box, slide it into the hole and fix it in place with screws. Add hooks the inside of the cabinet for your guns and secure them.
6. Install the door. Use a big piece of wood as this is where you install the mirror on one side and cabinet hinges on the other side. Mount the door on the frame of the box, making sure it fits and nothing is out of place.
7. Install the lock. You can use the traditional lock and key or a keypad activated lock.

2. Cut 2 wood panels measuring 3 x 1’ for the top and bottom of the case.
3. Join the panels to form a rectangular box with an open lid. Countersink the screws to ensure a neat design.
4. Attach the thin paneling on one side of the box with your small nails. This will form a box with an open lid.
5. Attach the hinge to the open side of the box and make sure they move. Fix the handles to the two sides of the door.
6. Fix with nails a 2 x 2” section of wood on the front side of the box’s bottom part to keep the guns in place.
7. Install the lock following the lock’s instructions. You might have to use the drill for this task.
8. Smooth the surface of the gun case with the sandpaper. Use a wet rag to remove excess dust.
9. Varnish or paint the gun case with your paintbrush.
Wooden Display gun cabinet
1. Make smaller panels by using a circular saw to cut the plywood. The surface that is to be the outside of the cabinet should be facing down. Work the finished cuts on the table saw.
2. Work the first cut by sliding the tack strip into the miter gauge slot. Guide the panel through the blade.
3. Cut the dadoes as well as the rabbets in the case panels using a router and strait bit. Use a 23/32” straight bit, which is the actual thickness of a ¾” sheet of plywood.
4. Rip the edge strips with a smooth-cutting blade. Cut to measurement and apply glue to the strip and panel edge and secure it in place with a piece of masking tape.
5. When the glue dries, work the strip flush to the surface. With a chisel, cut the strips from the top corner of the lower case.
6. Assemble the case by driving screws from the sides of the case through to the horizontal panels. Repeat the same step to build the lower case. The moldings will hide the screws. For the upper case, mark, cut and install the stiffeners. Install the back panel. At the topmost horizontal panel, cut the shallow wiring recess.
7. Rip molding stock and join the edges. They should be parallel and the ends square. Work on the first dado cut and slide the fence in the groove. Do the same with the second dado cut and so on until you complete the molding.
8. Cut the thumbnail molding and the rest of the moldings on the router table, then rip from the table saw. Assemble the moldings to the case, starting with the dentil. Then, apply the ogee molding.
9. Cut the barrel rest by boring a series of 1” diameter holes. Then make cuts beside the holes with a sabre saw. Build the pistol platform and cover it with felt. However, install the platform after completing the cabinet.
10. Rip and cut the door rails and stiles. Then, mark the location where you are to bore holes in the rails or the stiles and make the holes. When done, pass through the dowel centers and use a framing square to check for alignment.
11. Sand the doors with an oscillating sander. Work on the glazing rabbets on the inside of the door and fix the molding edge on them.
12. Lastly, install the door hinges.
There are many ways to store and hide the guns. Or if you want the guns displayed, you can do so with a gun rack or a display cabinet. Whatever way you choose to store your guns, the place needs to be convenient and secure and still allow you to admire and handle your collection easily.
