How to build a wooden entertainment center for audio and video components in home theater

Although there are hundreds of wooden entertainment centers for sale, there’s something truly special about building your own.

Well, there’s no need to hesitate about engaging in some woodworking. By following this simple guide, you’ll soon have your own wooden entertainment center—and your guests will surely be impressed.

Tools and Materials

• Pencil or Wood Marker

Mark the pieces of wood with letters to make them easier to recognize—T for top surface, B for the bottom, and H for the horizontal divider. You could also put V1 and V2 on the vertical dividers, and S1 and S2 for the sides.

• Top and Bottom Surfaces

For the top and bottom surfaces, you need to have two pieces that are 14.5 inches in width and 56 inches in length. Mark the two pieces, particularly to identify which side will face the front.

• Horizontal Divider

Cut a 1-piece horizontal divider with measurements of 12 ½” (twelve and a half inch) width x 18” (eighteen inch) length of wood. You can always adjust the length of the horizontal divider if you want.

• Vertical Dividers

Cut 2 pieces of wood with measurements of 12 ½” (twelve and a half inch) width x 12” (twelve inches) in length or height.

• Sides

For the two sides, you need two pieces of wood (14.5 inches in width and 12 inches in length or height).

• Base or Stand

Cut wood into two 4×52-inch pieces. Cut another two pieces with measurements of 4.5 inches in width and 4 inches in length.

• Screws or Nails and Drill or Hammer

The length of the screws or nails will depend on the thickness of the wood. You can use 2.5-inch screws for a two-inch-thick piece of wood. To be sure, ask a personnel at the hardware store.

• Saw or Cutting Equipment

When you buy your wood, you can ask the hardware employee if they already have precut pieces or something closer to the measurements above.

• Sanding Block or Sandpaper

You can always use a sanding block if you don’t have a sander. Some even use a sandpaper manually, though this clearly requires more effort.

Other Things You’ll Need

• Wood Stain
• Measuring Tape or Tool
• Wood Finish

Once you’ve gathered all the things needed for the project, it’s time for you to learn how to build a wooden entertainment center for audio and video components in home theater.

Steps and Procedures

1. Middle Divider

Make your middle divider. Get your measuring tape or measuring tool and mark the middle of the two pieces of vertical dividers where you will align the horizontal divider in between.

Take the horizontal divider and let it stand. You can put it between two pieces of wood or any stabilizer to make it easy for you to drill or hammer it.
Put one piece of the vertical divider above it, making sure that the horizontal divider is at the middle. It should form a letter T. Predrill and screw it to secure.

You can use nails and a hammer if those are what you have on hand. Remove your stabilizer. Flip it over and attach the other vertical divider, forming a letter I when standing. Secure it with screws or nails. Lay it down and put it aside.

2. Top and Bottom Surfaces

Put the two sides at the each end. You can use stabilizers to make them more secure, especially when you lay the top surface across them. Make sure that everything’s properly aligned.

Drill and screw to secure both sides. Get a measuring tape and mark where you’re going to put your middle divider. It should be of equal distance from both ends.

Get your middle divider, forming a letter I lying down, and slide it under the top surface. The front should be aligned with the top surface’s front, living a 2-inch space or gap at the back for the cords and other component attachments. Predrill and screw.

Flip it over and attach the bottom surface, securing it with screws or nails.

3. Attaching the Base

Lay one piece of the longer base across the bottom surface. It should be at the center with a one-inch gap on the front, and equally spaced at both ends. Secure it. Place the two shorter ones up against it and secure. Complete the rectangle by putting in and securing the last piece.

You can always adjust the width of the shorter base if you don’t want to have a space at the back base, just make sure to measure it properly. And, you can also make the base taller by adding another base.

4. Finishing

Sand it before flipping and continuing. Wipe the dust and vacuum. Follow the instructions that came with your chosen wood stain. When it’s all dry, you can apply your wood finish.

As you can see, this is just a basic woodworking guide for a wooden entertainment center. It’s relatively short in height, so be free to adjust the measurements depending on your preferences and given the amount of space you have at home.
