The truth about woodworking is that is a fairly lenient craft for the uninitiated. In fact, you can build something decent and reliable from wooden with minimal skill and using only nails, a hammer, saws, wood glue, and sandpaper. If you want to get yourself acquainted with woodworking, here are some projects that you can try out for yourself.
1. Deck Box
A Deck Box is comprised of two parts: the container and the lid. To build the frame of the container, you will have to connect 4 2×2 posts at 10 inches long with 4 boards that are 30 inches at the top and bottom to form the longer sides.
Then, you will connect the two halves through 4 2×2 boards at 15 inches in length. Once the frame is complete, you will then lay 2×2 boards at the bottom and at all sides.
As for the lid, you only need to attach 2×2 boards along two 2×1 posts and then install two hinges at one side. Once done, all that is left to do is to attach the other side of the hinges to the container, soften the rough edges of the box, and give it a coat of paint.
2. Simple Chair
This is perhaps one of the easiest woodworking projects to date. Start with cutting 2 2×2 beams at 21 inches high. Then, attach a 1×4 16 inch beam which then connects to a 2×4 beam at 10.5 inches. If done right, you should have two halves of a chair forming the letter “h”.
For extra support, you should cut 4 5-inch beams from 1×3 piece of wood with a 45-degree angle slope at both sides. This will then be attached to the corners beneath where the seat would be attached to.
Then, you should cut a 19×18.5 inch square from 1.5 inch plywood to form the seat. You should also cut 2 16 inch beams from 1×3 wood to form the support at the back.
Once done, all that is left to do is to attach the seat on the top of legs and supports as well as the back supports at the topmost portion of the back legs. After this, you can then start sanding down the rougher edges and giving your seat a wooden stain.
3. Gate
For this project, you will need only 2×2 beams, 2 1×3 beams with 45 degree diagonal cuts at the side, 2 hinges, a bolt lock, a drill, galvanized screws, and wood glue. The measurements of these beams should match the dimensions of the entryway where the gate will be placed it.
Start by installing two beams at opposite ends of the entryway. This is where the gate will be connected to at the hinges and the lock. Then, you can start laying out the 2×2 beams side by side and secure them using wood glue.
Finally, you will place 3 2×2 beams across the board you have made and lay the 2 45 degree beams between them diagonally. Once done, all that is left to do is to install the hinges at one side of the three horizontal beams and the locks on the other.
