How to build a wooden china cabinet hutch, corner hutch with drawer and dining room kitchen hutch

It’s easy to run out of storage space in the house, especially if you love collecting stuff. One of the most common items that people collect is china. Due to the elegance of these pieces, it’s a shame to have no place to store and display them for your guests to appreciate.
This article teaches how to build a wooden china cabinet hutch with drawers for extra storage. This is a great piece of furniture to add in any corner of your dining room or kitchen as your display items can be seen from all angles.

STEP 1 – GATHER EVERYTHING YOU NEED
For this project, you’ll need the following:
• Plywood (2 sheets; 4 x 8/12”)
• Scrap (2 x 4”)
• Pallet wood
• Adjustable feet
• Hinges and knobs
• Brad nails
• Tung oil finish
• Trim Screws
• Wood glue
• Pocket screws
• Wax paper

STEP 2 – GATHER YOUR TOOLS
These are the normally used tools but alternatives are always a welcome.
• Brushes for applying the glue
• Orbital or bench sander
• Clamps
• Nail gun and compressor
• Table saw
• Screw gun
• Nail sets
• Jigsaw
• Mineral spirits
• Miter saw
• Router table
• Trim router

STEP 3 – MAKE A PLAN
For this project, you’ll be working on a corner hutch that comes out of wall at the ends rather than the normal triangular shape. Cut out the shape you want from cardboard, using the corner you plan to place it in as reference. Use this piece of cardboard as your template.
For this project you’ll need 8 shelves, so calculate the pieces of wood you’ll need according to your plan. A good suggestion is to use 2 x 4” pieces, cut into 1 x 4” pieces. This is enough for 8 shelves.
Use the cardboard template to measure out the shelves.

STEP 5 – BUILD THE BASE
Use 2 x 4s to build your base. Add an adjustable feel if necessary. Give it a recessed look by making the base smaller than the hutch’s footprint.

STEP 6 – BUILD THE BASE CABINET
For the base cabinet, you’ll be making 4 shelves, two sides, and a back. Two of these shelves will be for the drawer.

STEP 7 – BUILD THE FACING
Once you’ve finished building the base cabinet, add two pieces of pallet wood vertically on each side for the facing.

STEP 8 – BUILD THE COUNTERTOP
Use strips of pallet wood to create a countertop. Try cutting the wood into strips that are 1 inch wide and about 6-8 inches long. Glue all these on top of the base cabinet and smooth them down with a belt or orbital sander.

STEP 9 – BUILD THE DOORS FOR THE CABINET
Use ripped down 2 x 4s and put them together using pocket screws.

STEP 10 – MAKE THE DRAWER
For the drawers, you can use ½” scraps. For the bottom of the drawers, you can use ¼” plywood, and for the faces, you can use pallet wood.

STEP 11 – BUILD THE UPPER CABINET/SHELVES
Now it’s up to you if you want to make the upper part a cabinet, or if you want more shelves to add more display spaces. Base the spacing of the shelves on those you placed in the base cabinet.

STEP 12 – ADD KNOBS
To make it easier to pull the drawers and cabinet doors open, add some knobs in the design of your choice.

STEP 13 – ADD FINISH
Once you’ve built your wooden china cabinet hutch, you can now apply some finishing to complete its look.
