How to build a small fine glass top Japanese futon coffee table with storage from beginner woodworking blueprint designs

Since a lot of people use coffee tables to prop up their laptop while working, or to put their food on while watching television, it’s not bad to take it up a notch by trying to make it more comfortable. The Japanese futon is famed for providing comfort on cold days, letting you can get under the futon and stay cozy while having a handy table surface for food, or reading. What more, a glass top adds the chic aspect of a coffee table which provides the gorgeous contrast between the homey feel of the futon, as the glass top is for more extravagant-type furniture. Here’s how it can be done.

Materials Needed

* Pre-cut lumber or wood of your choice
• 2×4 – 8 ft. or stud length (2 pcs.)
• 2×2 – 8 ft. (4 pcs.)
• 1×12 – 8 ft. (1 pc.)
• 1 ¼ in. by 2 ½ in. PH screws

* 52 in. glass table top (1 pc.)
* Wood filler
* Wood stain and varnish
* Wood glue
* Sand paper
* Stem Bumpers
* Japanese Futon

Tools

* Safety glasses
* Miter Saw
* Tape Measure
* Drill
* Speed Square
* Nailer Kit

Instructions:

* Main Body of Coffee Table

– Build two side trim pieces.

– Connect together with your 1×12 board, assuming it is 11 ¼ in. wide. If it’s not of the same width, adjust accordingly. This length should be twice as long as your 1×12 board. Hide the PHs on the underside.

– Build the bottom shelf storage with ¾ in. PHs/1 ¼ in. PH screws. Drill ¾ in. PHs on the outside edges.

– Attach these to your bottom shelf. This would serve as the storage.

– Decorative X braces are for the most part exactly that. Nothing fancy assembly needed for these ones. Make sure they’re screwed on the underside and that they’re 60 degrees off square. Attach with wood glue.

– Finish off the main body with wood stain and varnish. Apply as needed, and use wood stain and varnish of your own choice.

* Glass top

– After finishing the main body, prepare the top part of the coffee table and make sure it does not have debris left by wiping on the surface.

– Drill holes in your desired area to put the stem bumpers. This would create a barrier between the wood and the glass; it would decrease friction and vibration as well.

– The glass top would be ready to be put, however, this is an instruction with a Japanese futon, so we continue.

* Japanese futon

– Instead of putting the glass top over, prepare your futon. Make sure that it can go over the top part of the coffee table while still being able to sufficiently cover whoever is using it.

– Put the Japanese futon on the main body.

– Finally, put the glass top on top of the futon.

General notes:

• If you want to finish the drills clean, use sand paper. Vacuum project to remove sanding residue.

• If there are gaps, you can just fill them in with wood filler. Let dry. Apply double coats of filler if needed.

• Make sure to always use straight boards.
