How to build a simple cedar French wardrobe armoire for clothes with built in jewelry compartment

Wardrobe cabinets are expensive if you look at their price tags on most furniture stores. There are also so many options, which makes choosing complicated. But if you go the route person, one that you made yourself lets you save money and have everything customized. All your requirements on the size and design will be met.

Wardrobe storage can both be functional and beautiful. If you’re looking to use cedar wood, it will be easier because it’s a pretty workable kind of wood. Here are the steps to follow to make a French wardrobe armoire for clothes with compartment for your jewelries and other keepsakes.

1. Prepare your materials and tools. This will include your saws, nail guns, drill, wood glue, stains, and screws. The piece of number you’ll have to get will depend on the size of your desired armoire. Consult woodworking plans for this, or get your own accurate measurements if you have created the blue print yourself. When you have determined the size, you can also ask the local hardware personnel of the number of wooden sheets and boards you will need. Look up design ideas on moldings, hinges, and knobs.

2. Build the carcass. Cut the large wooden sheet to determined width and height. You will need to attach the pieces you cut using pocket hole screws.

3. Continue with the process until you made a box frame. It should already have a top shelf and a base shelf.

4. Cut another wood to match the size of what would be the armoire’s back. Glue it to the existing framework. Nail it afterwards for a firmer attachment.

5. Cut several pieces of wood to serve as trims. This will give the armoire a prettier look. Look for inspiration on the internet for trim designs.

6. Assume that you will have the armoire transferred to other locations when finished. So at this point, you need to add feet to the frame. Measure the feet you will use. Cut holes on the left and right portions of the base shelf. Glue the feet on these holed areas.

7. Cut two or three pieces of wood to serve as middle layers. They should be shorter than the top and base shelves. Again, for firmer attachment to the existing pieces, glue them together and nail afterwards.

8. Make a smaller compartment that will serve as repository of keepsakes and jewelry. You can build a hidden one by placing it within the layers. You can have this compartment have a lock of its own.

9. Measure the dimensions of the front panel of the armoire. Using the large sheet of wood, you can make two doors for the cabinet. One for the wardrobe compartment and one for the shelf-type divisions where the jewelry compartment resides.

10. Put trims on the doors to serve as decorative elements. Sand the entire armoire for a smoother look. Varnish can be an option for finished look but high-quality paint can also be used.

11. Once varnish or paint has dried. It is time to put on the handles or knobs for easier opening and closing of the armoire.

Building a French armoire with jewelry compartment is not just for the experts. With the right materials and tools along with basic measuring and cutting skills, making one can definitely save you some money.
