Thinking of creating a do-it-yourself greenhouse for your garden? Yes, you can create one using wood and other cheap materials! This woodworking plan lets you create a simple wood greenhouse easily using minimal expensive materials.
Materials Needed
You don’t necessarily need to spend thousands of dollars for a simple backyard greenhouse. Gather the following materials to get started:
* For the base:
Plywood sheathing, 2-15/32×4”x8 feet
Wood posts, 6 pieces 4×4”x8 feet
1lb of 3-inch galvanized decking nails or screws
* For the walls:
2×4”x8 feet treated framing lumber, 22 pieces
3lbs of 3.5-inch exterior decking screws
* For the roof:
2×4”x2 feet boards, 2 pieces
2×4”x8 feet board, 1 piece
2×4”x51 feet board, 9 pieces
1lb of 2-inch decking screws
* For the floor:
1×6”x8 feet boards or pallet wood
Scrap lumber pieces
Wood screws
* For the siding:
4×8” exterior panels, 2 pieces
Plastic sheeting, 6 mil
Square roofing nails
Furring strips, 1×2”x8 feet
* For the shelves:
2×4”x8 feet board
Furring strips, 1×2”x8 feet
How It’s Done
The greenhouse will start from the base and then progress to the frames, floors, and walls. The wood and plastic sidings will be added afterwards. Finally, the shelves inside the greenhouse will be created.
* Base:
* Nail or screw the plywood sheathing to the 6 pieces of wood posts. Allow for an interval of 2 feet per post to decrease chances of bowing due to weight.
* Wall Frames:
* Cut 2 pieces of 6-inch vertical boards from the lumber. Cut 3 pieces of 8-inch boards as well.
* Join the 5 board pieces using screws and nails. This will form one wall. Repeat this for the remaining walls.
* Nail and screw the wall frames to the greenhouse base. Allow a few feet of leeway space on the front of the structure for the door.
* Roof:
* Cut the 2×4”x8 feet board into 7 feet and 9 inches to account for the 2×4” vertical boards.
* Assemble the boards and screw them together to become the roof. Use the 2×4”x51 feet boards as the rafters.
* Floorboard:
* Strengthen the base by screwing some scrap lumber in the middle portion of the base.
* Cut the pallet wood or 1×6”x8 feet boards into smaller pieces and screw them to the base in an alternating pattern.
* Wood Siding:
* Cut each 4×8” exterior panel in half. Smooth each piece afterwards. This will yield 4 pieces of wood panels.
* Screw each panel piece to the bottom parts of the wall frames.
* Plastic Siding:
* The plastic sheeting needs to be doubled for the entire structure, so measure the plastic sheeting first and cover one wall at a time with it.
* Use square roofing nails to attach the plastic sheeting directly to the wood frames. Attach the nails in a straight-on approach and avoid angling them, as doing so may cause slips that will ultimately puncture and damage the plastic.
* Secure the plastic further by laying the furring strips on top of each wood frame and screwing them in place.
* Slatted Shelves:
* Attach one 2×4”x8 feet board on the level of the bottom wood frame sidings of the greenhouse.
* Screw furring strips spaced 1 inch apart over the attached board.
* Repeat both steps on the other side.
* You may add more shelves if you like.
Your basic homemade wooden greenhouse is now completed. It may look plain and simple from the outside, but it does a pretty good job of keeping your plants well-maintained all throughout the year.
The Bottomline
