How to build a fine DIY wooden platform for king size, queen size and twin-size loft beds with woodworking project plans

A large-size bed is just as good as the frame or platform it sits on. Thus, building one becomes necessary to make the most out of these beds.

A bed platform, surprisingly enough, is not that hard to build. If you have the right tools, materials, and a good woodworking project plan, you can have one set up for your bed within a day or so.

Cutting Guide

What you have to keep in mind is that the platform you are about to build is going to be massive. You have to make sure that the room it is going to be placed on has enough space for it. Whatever the case, here are the parts you will need to build the platform and it’s recommended measurements:

2 2×6 Front and Back panels at 78 inches long.
2 2×6 Side panels at 79 inches long.
3 2×4 Slat support panels for the center and outer frame at 89 inches long.
3 1×3 Top Trim panels at 83 inches long.
1 1×2 Top Trim panel at 75 inches long.
20 1×3 Slat panels at 75 inches.
6 4×4 Legs at 4 inches long.

Of course, you can change the measurements to fit the dimensions of the room. Also, it would be recommended that you build this platform on-site to minimize your efforts moving it from place to place.

Lastly, do not add too much height to the legs. Your platform will be carrying a lot of weight, which is why it needs to be as close to the ground as possible.

Assembly

Start with the outer frame by attaching the 2×6 panels to form a rectangle. While attaching the panels, it is recommended that you use 1inch brad nails or galvanized screws to so the joints won’t weaken in time. Also, applying metal plates at the joints would strengthen the frame to a certain degree.

After this, you can attach the legs at the inner corners of the frame and then the 2×4 slat supports. For double security, use two nails at a diagonal pattern when attaching the legs and the slats to the frame.

At this time, you might want to consider starting sanding the rough edges to minimize fitting issues later on. Do this before attaching the slats so you can still have enough room to go through each side of the frame. You might also want to fill in any gaps and cracks in the wood with wood fill and secure lose joints with glue.

Finishing

Once the main frame is ready, you can start attaching the trims on top and then stain your frame. The stain will not only make your wood look highly polished but would protect it from deterioration later on.

After this, you can start attaching the 20 slats perpendicularly on top of the frame. As you lay one after another, you might want to sand down the edges so your slats have uniform gaps.

Also, attach the slats through driving a 1 inch nail at the end where they make contact with the frame to keep the entire platform secure. Then, tighten any loose part in the frame before laying the mattress on top.
