How to build a DIY glider bench seat storage and mudroom out of wood

A glider bench with seat storage is multi-functional furniture that you can put near your entryway or in bedrooms. Adding mudroom functionality makes it an even better addition to your home. It can have seats, storage spaces under and above the seat, and some coat racks.

Below are the tools and materials you need for each project.

General Tools and Materials:

• Measuring and marking tools
• Safety gears like gloves, goggles, mask and earplugs
• Reciprocating saw or hand saw
• Sawhorses
• Planer
• Woodworking clamps
• Random orbital sander
• Sheets of 60-, 120-, 200- and 300-grit sandpaper
• 16-ounce claw hammer
• A pack of 3” round wire nails
• A pack of 1” round wire nails
• Power drill and drill bits
• Wood glue
• Paint and Primer
• Wood sealant
• Brushes

For the glider bench:

• 2 pieces of 120” x 15” x ½ plywood (for the seat and backrest)
• 2 pieces of 15” x 14” x ½ plywood (for the legs/sides of the of the compartment)
• 2 pieces of 50” x 3” x ½” plywood (for the back support)
• 2 pieces of 100” x 15” x ½” plywood (for the apron box)
• A piece of 100” x 14” x ½ plywood (for the base of the storage)
• 3 door hinges
• Screwdriver
• A pack of screws

For the mudroom:

• A piece of 150” x 90” x ½” plywood (for the backboard)
• 2 pieces of 150” x 15” x ½ plywood (for the sideboards)
• 3 pieces of 89” x 15” x ½” plywood (for the seat and shelves)
• 2 pieces of 15” x 10” x ½” plywood (for the compartments)
• Coat hooks
• Cushions

Instructions:

For the glider bench:

1. Do the necessary sawing and planing for the lumber and other wooden parts. You can buy them at a local store precut or you can cut them yourself.

2. Sand the wood pieces using the random orbital sander and 60-grit sandpaper. Re-sand them using the 120-grit sandpaper.

3. Get the plywood pieces for the apron boxes. Set them upright. Lay down the base in between the apron boxes. Attach them using the wood glue. Further secure them using 3” round wire nails.

4. Next, attach the legs or the sides of the compartment. You can also use the combination of wood glue and 3” round wire nails.

5. Then, mark the sides of the compartment with a slanting line. It should start with the ½” mark on the upper side. The height difference between the starting point and end point should be 1” or 2”. You can use a planer and reciprocating saw (or hand saw) for this step.

6. Using the 60-grit sandpaper, sand the newly planed or sawed parts. Re-sand using the 120-grit sandpaper.

7. Put one of the 120” x 15” x ½ plywood pieces on top of the compartment. Place the piece with its edge on the edge of the front apron box. Attach them together using the hinges and screws. This will serve as the glider bench seat and cover for the compartment. The part where the hinges are should be the front of the glider bench.

8. Build the backrest next. Get the two pieces of 50” x 3” x ½” plywood. Attach them on the apron box using the 3” round wire nails. Then, attach the remaining 120” x 15” x ½” plywood piece as the backrest. You can also use a combination of wood glue and 1” round wire nails for this.

9. Sand the glider bench using the 200-grit sandpaper and then the 300-grit sandpaper.

10. Coat the glider bench with the paint primer. After an hour, apply white paint. Wait for another hour to coat white or your preferred color.

11. Apply wood sealant and let it dry.

For the mudroom:

1. Saw and plane the wooden parts.

2. Using the random orbital sander and 60-grit sandpaper, sand all the wooden pieces.

3. Using the hammer and 3” round wire nails, attach the sideboards to the backboard. The butt of the sideboards should be attached on each of the ends of the backboard.

4. Place one of the three 89” x 15” x ½” plywood pieces on the base of the backboard. Use the hammer and the appropriate round wire nails. This will serve as the lower shelf for the mudroom furniture.

5. Next, put the two pieces of 15” x 10” x ½” upright on the lower shelf. Make sure the two are evenly placed. Attach them using wood glue.

6. Put one of the 15” x 10” x ½” pieces on top of the supposed compartment. This one will serve as the seat as well as the upper side of the compartment.

7. As for the remaining 15” x 10” x ½” piece, put near the top of the mudroom piece. This will serve as the upper shelf. It should be 10” in height. Attach it using the hammer, along with the appropriate round wire nails.

8. As for the coat racks, you can attach them on the outer and inner side of the side boards. You can also place them a little down the upper shelf. It’s up to you how many coat racks you want to attach.

9. Re-sand the entire mudroom piece using the 200-grit sandpaper. Afterwards, re-sand it using the 300-grit sandpaper.

10. Apply paint primer on the entire woodworking piece. After an hour or so, coat it with white paint. Once dried, you can re-coat it with your preferred color.

11. Coat the entire mudroom piece with wood sealant.

12. Place the cushions on the seat of the mudroom.
