Feeling overwhelmed with the idea of creating tables, chairs, and beds for your little ones? You can easily build these furniture pieces with this woodworking plan.
Wooden Activity Table and Chairs
This table and 2-chair set is ideal for kids aged 2-8 years old. The table measures around 24 inches tall, while the chairs are around 14 inches tall.
Prepare the following materials:
* 1 plywood sheet, ¾ inch thick
* 1x2x8 board, 1 piece
* 4x4x8 board, 1 piece
* 2x2x8 board, 5 pieces
* 2-inch wood screws
* 2 ½ inches pocket hole screws
* 1 ¼ inches pocket hole screws
* Wood glue
Here are the steps to follow for creating the table:
1. Cut 4 pieces of table legs at 24 inches long each from the 4x4x8 board.
2. Cut 6 pieces at 24 inches long from the 2x2x8 board. This will serve as the table’s base.
3. Drill one 1 ½-inch pocket hole at the end of each 2×2 table leg piece.
4. Use wood glue to assemble together 4 out of the 6 pieces of 2×2 table base. Screw each piece together around each side of the 4×4 table leg pieces as well. Once finished, this will become the table’s frame and leg base.
5. Create the base for the table’s shelf by screwing the remaining 2 pieces of 2×2 wood pieces approximately 6 inches off the bottom of two opposite leg pairs.
6. Cut a piece of 33×33” from the plywood to serve as the table top.
7. Cut another 20×27” piece to serve as the table shelf.
8. Flip the table top with right side facing downwards. Place the table top upside down on it, and adjust so that there is an inch hanging off the ends of each table leg.
9. Use 2-inch screws to secure the table top and frame together. Screw around the top and through the apron.
10. Position the shelf with the right side facing down as well. Clamp in place.
11. Screw the shelf through the bottom of the two shelf bases.
Your children’s table is now complete. It’s time to move on to the chairs.
1. Begin with the chair back. Cut two pieces measuring 11×11” each from the ¾” plywood. Create a curve design along the top side using a jig saw.
2. Cut four 28-inch long pieces from the 2×2 boards to serve as the back frame.
3. Position one chair back piece around 18 inches from two back frame pieces. Clamp them in place and screw together using 2-inch screws. Repeat for the other chair.
4. Cut 4 11-inch pieces from the 1×2 board to serve as chair frame. Cut 2 14-inch pieces from the 2×2 board as well.
5. Drill 3/4” pocket holes on the ends of each of the 4 pieces of cut 1×2 board.
6. Assemble the chair frame by screwing the 1×2 board pieces to the backside of each 2×2 board piece to form a square that connects with the chair’s backside. Use 1 ¼” pocket hole screws for this. Repeat everything for the other chair.
7. For the seat, cut a 14×14” piece from the ¾” plywood.
8. Set the plywood on the chair frame.
9. Mark two 1 1/2” squares on the back corners of the chair seat. Cut them to form notches for the back corners.
10. Attach the seat to the frame using 2” screws. Repeat all for the other chair.
You’ve now created two chairs to match your activity table.
Finish off with two coats of polyurethane water-based varnish, a layer of pigmented wood stain for tinting, and a top coat of polyurethane varnish to seal it all.
Wooden Kid’s Bed
This project is a basic kid’s single bed frame that can fit a 700mm x 1400mm mattress.
Gather these materials to get started:
* 1 plywood, 720mm x 1420mm x 18mm
* 3 pieces CLS timber, 38mm x 89mm x 3000mm
* Screws and wood glue
Start off by following these instructions:
1. Cut CLS timber pieces with a miter saw or a handsaw. Follow this cut list:
* 2 pieces 1458 mm – rail pieces
* 2 pieces 758 mm – rail pieces
* 6 pieces 190 mm – legs
* 6 pieces 234 mm – legs
2. Cut ledges from the four rail pieces – the timber pieces measuring 1458mm and 758mm, respectively. Do so by cutting a groove 19mm wide and 45mm deep.
3. The joinery uses a half lap joint. Remove the 38mm cube from the bottom of the shorter rails, and remove the 19mm cube from the longer rails. Keep in mind that the shorter rails go over the top of the longer rails.
4. Glue the joint pieces together, then drill a pilot hole and screw in place.
5. Start creating the legs by gluing and screwing one 190mm piece with one 234mm piece. You should have a total of 6 legs.
6. Take 4 leg pieces and cut a 38mm section from each of them. These 4 will serve as corner legs, and the cut allows them to directly sit in the frame corners.
7. Screw each completed leg to the bed frame using 3 screw pieces. Use 1 screw through the leg to the frame, and use 2 screws for connecting through the frame to the legs.
8. Fit the plywood on the completed bed frame. There should be a 5mm gap around the frame.
9. Screw the plywood in place using 2 screws for each side.
10. Sand rough edges and apply varnish coats as desired.
Your kid’s basic bed frame is now finished. Top off with a mattress of your choice and you’re all set.
It’s easy to create tables, chairs, and basic beds for your kids using this woodworking guide plan. Just cut the appropriate wood pieces, assemble them together, and finish off with some varnish. Your kids will love these new furniture pieces.
