When you do woodworking projects, the first thing that you need to do is prepare the necessary tools and materials. Usually, the materials needed are pieces of wood. Wood
There are two kinds of wood used by woodworkers: hardwoods and softwoods. The hardwoods are very sturdy materials that are popularly used in classic furniture. Walnut, birch, poplar, cherry, oak, maple, mahogany, teak, and ash are examples of hardwoods. However, these woods are hard to find, thus these are very expensive too. It is also used for furniture and cabinets, though very expensive because of its fine texture, more natural color, and grain patterns.
On the other hand, softwoods are cheaper and easier to find. Kinds of softwood include pine, cedar, and fir. This type of wood is a bit reddish and sometimes yellowish. The kind of woodwork always determines the wood to be used.
Tools
Just like wood, there are two kinds of tools used by woodworkers: hand tools and power tools. The use of these tools also depends on the kind of project that you will do. Common hand tools used include hammers, handsaws, and screwdrivers. Hand tools are classified into edge tools and measuring tools. Edge tools are used to cut or shape the wood in order to create specific details in the wood craft. It includes handsaws, scrapers, gouges, chisels, and planes. On the other hand, measuring tools are often used with marking tools. Measuring tapes, rulers, squares, are used to measure the wood before cutting it. It needs to be marked either by using pencil, marking knives, and dividers. Other tools that are not included in these categories are hammers, screwdrivers, and mallets. These are used to drive screws and nails and join parts together.
On the other hand, power tools use electricity to work. It operates using motors. Power tools include drills, miter saws, jigsaws, and routers. These devices are portable but it is seldom used in small wood crafts. There are kind of tools that are not portable, like jointers, table saws, drill presses, planers, and shapers. These are called stationary tools. Lathes, band saws, and mortise machines are included in this category.
